Why Is My Water Bill So High? 7 Causes Lexington, KY Plumbers See Every Week

If your Lexington-area water bill jumped without warning, one of these seven culprits is almost always behind it. Here’s how to diagnose each one before you call.

1. A silent toilet leak

The #1 cause we find in Lexington homes. A flapper that doesn’t seal can waste 200 gallons a day — quietly. Drop food coloring in the tank, wait 15 minutes, check the bowl. Color in the bowl = leak.

2. An irrigation line break underground

Common in older Chevy Chase and Beaumont neighborhoods. A buried lateral pops a slow seep, your meter spins, your bill climbs. We’ll camera-scope it and pinpoint within a foot.

3. Water heater leak (slow)

A pinhole leak at the tank base or T&P valve drips constantly. If your closet smells damp or the floor is warm, this is your problem.

4. A faucet you forgot about

The hose bib in the back yard. The laundry tub in the basement. Walk every fixture once a month — costs nothing, saves hundreds.

5. A running humidifier or recirculation pump

Whole-home systems can cycle out-of-spec and dump water through a drain you never see.

6. A pressure regulator that died

City pressure in Lexington runs 60–80 PSI. If your PRV failed open, you’re getting 100+ — and every fixture leaks more.

7. A neighbor on your line

Rare but real. Old shared service lines exist in Richmond and parts of central Lexington. We can isolate with a meter test.
