Why your tank runs cold — and tankless doesn't
A tank water heater has stored hot water — 40 to 75 gallons of it. Cold water enters at the top and a dip tube carries it to the bottom of the tank, while hot water is pulled off the top. When multiple fixtures pull from the top faster than the burner can recover, the hot layer drops and cold water takes over. That's why two showers plus a dishwasher can mean cold water by person #2 — a typical 50-gallon tank recovers at around 42 gallons per hour, far slower than a morning rush draws it down.
A tankless heater doesn't store a 50-gallon supply. When a fixture opens, the burner fires and heats water as it passes through the heat exchanger — no storage tank to empty, so it never runs out. Sizing matters, though: Kentucky winter inlet water runs around 52°F, so simultaneous demand, temperature rise, gas line, venting, and code all factor into which unit (or units) fit your home.
