What we actually find down there, in rough order of frequency: roots at pipe joints (treatable, or lineable), grease and scale (jettable — see hydro jetting), bellies — sagging sections that hold water and catch debris, offsets and cracks at joints, and occasionally a genuinely collapsed section. Only that last one truly demands excavation — and usually only at one spot.

That's the money insight: most "replace the whole line" situations are actually "fix 6 feet of it" situations.
