A broken sewer lateral used to mean one thing in Lexington: an excavator in the front yard, a trench from the foundation to the street, a sidewalk cut with an LFUCG right-of-way permit, and a lawn that took a season to come back. A bursting head is pulled through the old line with up to 30 tons of force, breaking the failed pipe outward into the soil while towing brand-new HDPE pipe into its place. Two small access pits — one at each end — instead of a trench in between.
