A sewer lateral rarely fails all at once. It tells you first. Any one of these is a reason to put a camera in the line before it becomes a backup in the basement.
Working out of United Court, we see two very different Lexingtons underground. Inside New Circle Road, the streetcar-era neighborhoods — Ashland Park, Chevy Chase, Kenwick, Bell Court, Aylesford — sit on clay tile laterals laid in short sections with a joint every few feet. Ninety years later those joints have opened, and the mature maples and oaks that make these streets beautiful have found every one of them. Root intrusion at the joints is the single most common thing our camera finds inside the circle. Cast-iron drains under the slab in these homes are often on their last legs at the same time.
The 1950s and 60s ring — Gardenside, Cardinal Valley, Southland, Meadowthorpe, Lansdowne — is mostly clay too, with a wildcard: some post-war subdivisions were plumbed with Orangeburg, a tar-impregnated fiber pipe that slowly deforms into an oval and then flattens. If the camera finds Orangeburg, lining or replacement is a matter of when, not if.
Outside New Circle, the newer PVC laterals in Hamburg, Andover, Beaumont, Masterson Station and Hartland do not root or rust, but they do settle. A belly — a sagging section that holds standing water — catches every bit of grease and paper that comes down the line, and a joint offset where fill settled under a driveway will snag a cable. Different pipe, different failure, same result: a main line that keeps backing up.

Permits and inspections. Replacing or repairing a sewer lateral in Kentucky is licensed plumbing work that takes a plumbing permit and an inspection. We pull the permit under our license (KY #M7707) and schedule the inspection — you never have to chase paperwork.
Kentucky 811. Before any excavation, including the small pits for pipe bursting, the underground utilities get located and marked. We file the Kentucky 811 ticket as part of the job so gas, water, power and fiber are flagged before we dig.
Right-of-way. If the break sits under the sidewalk or the street — common in Lexington because the private lateral runs all the way to the main — the work needs an LFUCG right-of-way permit and traffic control. We handle that too, and it is one more reason trenchless usually wins inside the circle: lining from the cleanout means we never open the sidewalk at all.
